Go Green

Green is the new colour....

Leominster Anaerobic Digester
Exciting plans are afoot to provide Leominster with its own community owned and operated power plant producing renewable energy.

‘Project LeAD’ (Leominster Anaerobic Digester) aims to create an Anaerobic Digester suitable for processing biomass from agriculture such as grass and grass silage, food processing waste, cider-making waste, and food waste from schools, hospitals, pubs and restaurants, thus producing biogas.

The biogas will be used to produce electricity and also heat (as hot water) through a Combined Heat and Power scheme (CHP), which could be piped to Leominster’s hospital, schools and leisure centre, reducing their heating bills and lowering the town’s carbon footprint. The biogas could also power a local bus service.

We are all being encouraged these days to Go Green but what can we actually do that will make a difference to the enviroment aound us. We are all aware of Climate Change, our Carbon Footprint and many more enviromental issues that are changing our world forever. If we all do a little within our communities it will make a difference in the future.

In the Home.

Use energy saving light bulbs in the home, they can save money on your electricity bill and they produce less CO2 than a normal light bulb. They are readily available from all supermarkets at a reasonable price.

Insulating Your Home.

By properly insulating your home you could save money on your fuel bills and cut down on wasted energy. Wasted energy leads to higher CO2 emmisions which affect climate change. You can do this by insulating your loft, lagging your water tank, cavity wall insulation, use draft excluders in the home. Did you know that 40% of all heat loss in a home is through the loft and walls?

Stand- By.

Leaving your appliances in stand by mode can waste up to 10% of your total electricity use in the home. This not only adds to your fuel bill for the year but also adds to the excess carbon dioxide produced. The Government are slowly introducing appliances without stand by buttons but until then Switch Off.

Computer users

Cut your carbon and your electricity bill with the Eco Button. It's a small button that sits on your desktop and plugs into a USB port. When you want to leave the computer, say to visit the toilet, have lunch or pop out to the shop, but don't want to switch off and then have to reboot and open everything again, you press the button and the system powers off, but immediately comes back when you want it to with all your programs still open where you left them. One third or more of energy used on a PC and monitor is wasted energy, which can cost around £50 or more a year in wasted electricity. Costing around £12, it will pay back its cost in a few months and then start to save you money.

Shopping.

Buy Locally produced products and therefore cut down on the transport costs.

Use your own canvas bag or box for your shopping trips. Plastic bags are made of polythene which is believed to take 500 years to decompose. Millions of bags are given away and just discarded without being reused.  Each person on average uses 150 bags per year which equates to nearly 10 billion a year!

Avoid over packaged items, less packaging means less waste!

Buying recycled products.

Re-cycling

Welcome to the Ludlow & Leominster Freecycle group!

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,639 groups with 6,173,445 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns and thus keeping good stuff out of landfills.

Membership is free, and everything posted must be FREE, legal and appropriate for all ages. To view the items being given away or sought in Ludlow & Leominster, you must be a member of the local group. To view the local group posts, visit the local Yahoo Group where they are located
