Wondering what to get a mother, grandmother or godmother as a special treat for Mothering Sunday on 18 March 2012? How about a sumptuous cream tea on the terrace in one of Gloucestershire’s most beautiful gardens? Mill Dene Garden in Blockley, Moreton-in-Marsh, will be opening for the start of its season on ‘Mothers’ Day’ and there will be plenty of spring colour provided as bulbs burst into life to make the afternoon memorable for visitors.
In addition to the scones and clotted cream, delicious sandwiches (crustless, of course) and home-made cakes, there will be an ice cream tasting provided by local artisan maker Just Rachel, whose proprietor will explain how she makes her superb dessert. Mouth-watering flavours include treacle toffee and cream, sloe gin and damson. Visitors will also have an exclusive preview of the exhibition of sculpture and paintings which will be on show at Mill Dene in 2012.
The creator and owner of the garden, Wendy Dare, will give a short talk about how she and her husband Barry found the old Mill and its garden and created it over many years. Guests are invited to roam the garden taking in the charm of spring in the Cotswolds or just while away an afternoon with family and friends.
As a parting gift, visitors will receive a pot of seedlings of Unwins Sweet Pea ‘Barry Dare’, a rich red variety named for Mill Dene’s owner. Guests are welcome from 2pm to 5.30pm. The cost is £15.50 per person and booking is essential. A wet day provision is in place!
